Valencia rose and blood-orange hibiscus grown by Rosalie Stafford, National City, Spring of 2009. Valencia rose (purchased for half-price: $3.24) and blood-orange hibiscus ($6.00) were both planted Summer 2008. Strawberry plant at base of hibiscus not visible in photo. Nasturtiums run wild in the cottage garden. Rosalie Stafford uses no synthetic pesticides nor fertilizers in her gardens. Soil is extremely poor, a mixture of clay and sand. Amendments used consist of home-made compost, steer manure, and generously applied colonies of earthworms (from wormbeds in backyard). Return to roses index. |
